How to tell
Bats slip through gaps as small as a finger, so you often notice them before you find the entry. They’re common in summer in cedar-shake and older shore and lakeside homes.
Why it matters
New Jersey protects bats, and exclusion is restricted during the summer maternity season when flightless pups are in the roost. Sealing then traps the pups inside. Operators time the work to the legal window and use one-way doors so no bat is harmed.
Any bat found in a bedroom is also a possible rabies exposure. Don’t release it, and contact your local health department about whether it should be tested.
